I’m building a sailboat.
If you know me, you most certainly know all about it, and I feel sorry
for you. If you are my friend or
co-worker, you’ve had to listen to my daily updates on it’s progress.
If you’re my neighbor, well…..”Hey Hartman, what are you building?
A boat? Well, would you mind
getting it out of my driveway? I
have to get to work.” I apologize
to everyone, especially my wife to whom I promised I’d make some bookshelves
(they aren’t finished yet along with the boat…).
In today’s busy world, fewer and fewer people make or repair anything
themselves anymore. We leave most
things to the “professionals” and buy finished products or services.

Home centers have replaced the more
“builder friendly” lumber yards and sell more in the way of bath towels and
bed sheets than wood and supplies. Yet,
they still use the buzzword D.I.Y to describe their store.
It wasn’t so long ago that people would spend their weekends building a
boat with their kids or working on their car or even that leaky faucet.
I have a feeling that it will be very satisfying to use my creativity and
glide across the water in a boat I made with my own two hands.
You think so too? Great- can
you grab that hammer and give me a hand then?
I still have my wife’s bookshelves to finish……
